Gala Event to Raise Funds for
Breaking the Cycle Initiatives

(HARTFORD, CT, July 17, 2003) … Breaking the Cycle will hold an event to raise awareness and funds for teen pregnancy prevention initiatives on Monday, October 20, 2003. “Gold Star Gala – Successes in Teen Pregnancy Prevention” will be held from 6-9 p.m. on the top floor of the Tower Building at The Hartford.

Despite recent declines in teen pregnancy and birth rates, four out of ten young women still get pregnant at least once by age twenty. In Hartford the year before Breaking the Cycle began, 727 teens gave birth -- over 28 percent of the births in the city during 1994. Twenty-nine of those births were to teens under age 15. By the year 2000, births to teens in Hartford decreased to 482.

“These declining numbers are cause to celebrate -- and for renewed commitments to lower the numbers even further”, said Lizabeth Zlatkus, CFO at Hartford Life, who heads the event planning committee.  “We hope that area individuals and organizations will demonstrate their commitment to Hartford’s future by supporting this event,” she said.

Tickets for the Gold Star Gala are $50 for individuals or $450 for groups of 10.   The evening will feature hors d’ouevres and beverages, a silent auction, a live auction conducted by former Hartford mayor Mike Peters, and an opportunity to converse with Hartford teens who have prevented pregnancy by participating in one of Breaking the Cycle’s many initiatives.  The event is sponsored by The Hartford and by Day, Berry & Howard. Ramani Ayer, Chairman and CEO of the Hartford, is honorary chair of the event. Connecticut Congressman John Larson is honorary host. Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman are invited guests.

Additional sponsors and auction items are sought for the event.  Area individuals and organizations are also encouraged to purchase advertising space in the Gala program book. Deadline for advertising sales, sponsorships and auction items is September 5, 2003.  For more information about the Gold Star Gala, contact Breaking the Cycle at (860) 236-4872.
