Hartford Action Plan on Infant Health Honored at National Conference

January 7, 2002 ... Advocates for Youth honored the Hartford Action Plan on Infant Health, Inc., as the winner of its Supernova Award for 2001 at an award luncheon on December 3, 2001, at the Wyndham Hotel in Washington, DC.

The Supernova Award was created to honor long-term leadership, dedication, vision, and positive impact as an agent for change in the area of adolescent sexual and reproductive health.

The Hartford Action Plan on Infant Health, Inc., has offered programs since 1985 that provide the resources necessary to assist adolescents in making positive, responsible health decisions, including the innovative “Breaking the Cycle” teen pregnancy prevention campaign.  The Hartford Action Plan was instrumental in July 2001 efforts to pass policy to provide reproductive and preventive health services, including contraception, counseling, and testing, for students in the Hartford school system. Action Plan programs are made possible by a variety of public and private funding sources, including corporate contributions from MassMutual, CIGNA, The Hartford, and Travelers/Citigroup.

“The Hartford Action Plan’s persistence in advocating for the right of young people to make their own responsible decisions about their reproductive health is nothing short of extraordinary,” said Barbara Huberman, Director of Education and Outreach for Advocates for Youth.  “Its program and advocacy work can serve as a lasting template for other groups in the field.”

Advocates for Youth’s 20th Anniversary Conference, Rights, Respect, Responsibility: A New Paradigm for Healthy Adolescent Sexuality, was held December 2-4, 2001, in Washington, DC. This three-day learning opportunity challenged youth-serving professionals, sexuality educators, policy makers, health care providers, and youth themselves to examine current adolescent reproductive and sexual health policy and practice and to embrace a new paradigm – one that affirms adolescent sexual development as normal and healthy.

Advocates for Youth is an international, nonprofit organization that works in the U.S. and the developing world to create programs and support policies that help young people make safe, responsible decisions about their sexual and reproductive health.
