Opening Remarks and Hartford Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative overview

by Dr. Raul Pino - Acting Director City of Hartford Health and Human Services

Discussion AE: Adolescent Sexual Health in Our Community Panel
The vision for this grant is:
Hartford will be a community in which all youth will be educated and equipped to make informed decisions about their reproductive health, and every young person is healthy and self-sufficient.
We have invited a panel of community members from different professions and walks of life to talk about how the community can come together and support the vision of this grant.

11:00 - 12:15
Discussion BA: What are the plans for Community Mobilization
Discussion BS: What are the plans for Community Mobilization (Spanish Only)

This dual session will happen at the same time but in different rooms. For the grant, Hartford Action Plan has formed a small working group of adults called the Community Action Team. And we have a Youth Leadership Team as well. The purpose of both groups is to guide us as we are mobilizing the community around the overall goals and mission of the grant. In this discussion today, we would like to share with you more details of our plan and receive your feedback. Your advice and experience will help us to have a more successful plan. Please come ready to share and exchange ideas.

Discussion BY: Video and Discussion (Youth Only)
This session is concurrent with the ones above but in a separate room. We are going to use a 16 min. video as a jumpstart to their discussion. This video was written and performed by youth but directed by professional director. It is about young lovers who struggle to make the right decision about becoming parents. The Choices We Make addresses relationships, fatherhood and unintended pregnancy

You can preview the video HERE on the Scenarios website.

12:15- 12:45
BOX LUNCH and Networking - and then on to next session.

12:45 - 2pm
Discussion CA: Study Circles & Video
Discussion CS: Study Circles (Spanish Only)

One of the most important activities in the community mobilization plan will be the use of study circles in the neighborhoods. Study circles or dialogue to action is the format we will use to share the vision for the grant and engage community members to discuss the ways we can all support it and in the end reach the CDC mandated goal of reducing the teen birth rate in Hartford by 10% by 2015. To learn more about study circles click HERE.

VIDEO: The last 15 mins of the discussion will be used to show the same video the youth watched in their morning session. This will prepare the adults to have joint discussions with the youth in the next sassion at 2 pm. NOTE for Spanish Only: This video does not have a spanish version. We will show the video in a separate room and have it interpreted as it plays. We will also identify a few spanish speaking youth to join this discussion group.

Discussion CY: What is your role in community mobilization? (Youth Only)
We will share the community mobilization plan with the youth and discuss ways they would like to be involved in the community and at their school.

2 - 3pm
Discussion DA-Y: Round Table discussion on the video
Discussion DS: Round Table discussion on the video (Spanish Only)

This is a time for youth and adults to share their view points on the video The Choices We Make. We will randomly assign youth and adults to a table discussion. Each table will have a list of facts and questions about the video, The Choices We Make. After an allotted time for table discussion we will ask each table to share some key points with the rest of the group.
