Let's Talk - Parent Training Program
Don’t
leave information this important up to someone else.
As a parent, you might think there are times when your child
doesn’t want to listen to what you have to say — especially when it comes to
things like sex. But young people do want to hear from their parents
about sexuality issues.
Recent studies show that kids today want honest information
about sex, love and relationships. They want an open atmosphere — free of
lectures and threats — where they can discuss what’s on their mind with
their parents and get information they can trust. They want to know your point
of view so that they can develop one of their own.
Where do I start?
The fact is, you have already started. Children learn about
sexuality through their observations and relationships with parents and
families.
The messages you have given them from birth — how you talk
to them, show affection, play with them and teach them the names of the parts of
their bodies — are the beginnings of their sexuality development. The messages
you give them about appropriate behavior start in early childhood and form the
foundation for how they will relate to others.
Parents are the primary sexuality educators for their
children, but that doesn’t mean that parents are experts. If you’re
uncomfortable talking about sexuality issues, chances are your child will be
too. Fortunately, there is help.
Free Training!
Let’s
Talk, a new Parent/Child Sexuality Communication Program, offers
training to parent groups throughout Hartford, helping them learn to communicate
openly and effectively with their children on issues of sexuality.
Trained facilitators conduct the Let’s Talk sessions.
Group size is limited to 10-15 parents so personal attention can be given to
each participant. The training can be done in one 4-hour or two 2-hour sessions,
as best meets the needs of the group. Each participant will receive a set of
materials which include a list of developmentally-appropriate topics to discuss
according to age and school grade. Spanish-language sessions are also available.
