The Unity ProjectThe Unity Project was designed by the Center for Applied Research and Technical Assistance, Inc. (CARTA), a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring the healthy development of all young people, specifically youth of color. Breaking the Cycle was selected as one of three sites in the country to work with CARTA for approximately 18 months from May 2007 to October 2008. In collaboration with CARTA, each organization will use local data and research to examine: inequalities in sexual health; structural racism; privilege and inequality; the availability of and access to sexual health programs and services; the existence of local policies that address this issue; and the barriers and opportunities in Hartford to leverage and sustain action. The purpose of the Unity Project is to better understand the local context of racial/ethnic disparities in adolescent reproductive and sexual health and how structural racism and social inequality perpetuate these disparities. In Hartford, Breaking the Cycle and The City of Hartford's Office of Youth Services are working together to create a community collaboration that increases youth and adults' capacity capacity of organizations and communities in Hartford to address these issues and bring about positive change in the reproductive and sexual health of young people in Hartford.
